Amazon Prime Video and SXSW are joining forces to launch “Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection,” following the unprecedented cancellation of the SXSW Conference and Festivals by the City of Austin due to concerns surrounding the Coronavirus.

“Over the past week, I’ve been talking with dozens of executive directors, artistic directors and programming directors of festivals large and small to gather an understanding of the impact. One festival, which sees approximately 40,000 attendees at its annual event, said about 75% of its annual operating revenue comes in the three months leading up to and including the festival. Canceling the festival would almost certainly be catastrophic and potentially fatal to the organization. Postponing a festival comes with its own potential problems…” Read more
“After scores of festivals big and small have been canceled or postponed, some have moved their programming online. But there are barriers in the form of longstanding industry policies that prohibit widespread adoption of a virtual festival experience.
Now, 32 festivals and distributors and counting have signed on to a multi-pronged Film Festival Survival Pledge that aims to change that — providing festivals with much-needed revenue in the form of ticket and pass sales for online screenings as self-quarantine and social distancing have become the norm.”
“By screening online in a fixed-term, pay-wall enforced, official festival capacity, your submission is not earning revenue or being sold to consumers in a traditional VOD market and, therefore, remains viable for future sales opportunities.” Read more
